Full description
The chief component of this series is a group of eight photographs taken on the occasion of the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of secondary education in Newcastle in 1956. Seven of these were taken on the 2nd June, 1956, and record the unveiling of commemorative plaques at Newcastle Junior Boys’ High School by the Minister for Education, the Hon. R.J. Heffron. The eighth was taken at a commemorative tree-planting held on the 5th June. Four of these photographs measure approx. 22cm x 28cm, and were originally framed; the frames are not now present, but each photograph retains its cardboard mounting. The other four are postcard-sized, and were mounted as a group in a single frame; again, this frame is no longer present, but the photographs retain their original mounting.A ninth photograph, unmounted, depicts a cellar room in the school shortly after its conversion into a cinematic projection room, and is accompanied by a cutting of a newspaper article reporting on the conversion; this cutting is dated the 25th March, 1959.
Included with these photographs are photostat copies of architects’ plans, the originals of which were dated the 3rd May, 1878, for the first school buildings, and of later plans, whose originals were dated the 14th of April, 1914, for the construction of additional accommodation at the school.
These materials are accompanied by two typescript pages of notes on the history of the school, prepared for use at the school’s Speech Day, 14th February, 1966.
