The purpose of the Stock Book (Physical Education and Sports Equipment) was to keep a record of items of such equipment supplied to the school by the Department of Education or acquired from other sources, and of their expenditure and replenishment from year to year. Maintenance of the record was the responsibility of the Principal.

The volume is divided into columns, of which the first in each opening is pre-printed with an alphabetical list of the various items of sporting and athletic equipment which might be supplied to the school, and the others record details of successive stock-takes. Each column is further subdivided to record acquisitions since the previous stock-take, items written off as deficient or unserviceable, and the final tally of stock in hand.

The series from Sandgate Infants’ School consists at present of a single volume; it is not certain whether this is the only volume in the series, but it is certainly the final volume. This volume records physical education and sports equipment present at the school during its last three years of operation before closing at the end of 1969.

A note in red ink on the title page reads “At closing of school (11.12.69.) All stock in hand in “Physical Education Cupboard” was divided as equally as possible between Mayfield West and Beresfield. All Bean bags went to Beresfield.” The note is signed “J.H. Pepper / Teacher-in-Charge / Sandgate.” The school to which each item of equipment recorded in this volume was allocated has been entered on the appropriate page, also in red ink.
