Full description

This series of correspondence consists mainly of letters from the Lower Clarence County Council to the Department of Local Government regarding the Council’s Annual Statement of Accounts. There are letters notifying the Department of the impending audit of Accounts and the forwarding of audited accounts to the Department as required under Ordinance 26, Clause 50(a) of the Local Government Act, 1919. There are requests from the Department for the Statement of Accounts when the Council had not provided them within the required time.

The Department of Local Government would notify the Council if amendments to the Account Statements were necessary or if the Accounts were correct, the Council was required to publish the Statement in the local press within fourteen days under Ordinance 26, Clause 50(c) of the Local Government Act, 1919. There is correspondence with the local press instructing them to print the Statements of Accounts and the Council was also required to send these published Statements of Accounts to the Department of Local Government.

There is also correspondence with the Government Statistician regarding the forwarding of the Statements of Accounts to the Statistician. There is a letter from the Commonwealth Bureau of Census and Statistics requesting the Council’s 1958 Annual Statement of Accounts. Other documentation with the correspondence includes: page one of the Annual Report for the Lower Clarence County Council for 1953; Aggregate Revenue Account for the year ended 31 December 1956; Circulars from the Department of Local Government; Inspection report of the Council’s Accounts, Internal Organisation and Management by the Inspector of Local Government Accounts; and a Form of Certificate for Rate Book entries and valuations for 1964 as required under Clause 25 of Ordinance 5 and Clause 6 of Ordinance 26.
