Full description

On 19 July 1951, the Honourable Kenneth Whistler Street took the Oaths of Office as the Lieutenant-Governor of NSW before the Honourable Mr Justice Maxwell and assumed the Administration of the Government of NSW, presiding over a meeting of the Executive Council on 24 October 1951. On Tuesday 17 June 1964, again took Oaths of Office as Lieutenant-Governor before the Honourable Mr Justice Herron, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and assumed administration of the Government of NSW and took up residence at Government House.

The Lieutenant-Governors issued Press Notices from 19 July 1951 to 19 January 1966, providing listings of meetings of the Executive Council and receptions at Government House, plus numerous visits by His Excellency the Governor and Lady Cutler to a wide variety of official openings, receptions, fund-raising events and charities. The Governor and Lady Woodward also attended a variety of meetings, luncheons, dinners, and fund-raising events as well. (1)

Subsequent listings of Vice Regal notices issued by the Office of the Governor, including visits by numerous Consul Generals and Ambassadors, as well as functions organised for numerous societies and charities, and attendances at the Opera House, the Capitol Theatre, Parramatta Riverside Theatre, plus the opening of the Sydney Royal Easter Show and attendance at a performance by the Sydney University Graduate Choir of Handel's Messiah; at the Great Hall, University of Sydney, and a concert by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at St James Church, Sydney.

1n August 1997 after the horrific tragedy at Thredbo, sympathy was extended to the victims, their families and friends, and all the rescue teams who gallantly assembled to provide assistance. Later, on 1 September 1997, after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, a letter of sympathy was sent to the Queen, Prince William, Prince Harry, and all members of the Royal Family regarding her tragic death.

Then, on 5 December 1997, condolences were sent to families who had lost relatives in the devastating bush fires, as well as losing property and being threatened with imminent danger; with fire-fighters, police, medical, emergency services, community workers and volunteers risking their lives to ensure the safety of others, and hoping for respite soon.
