A shire council was responsibles for the care, control, construction, formation, fencing, maintenance and management of all public places within its territory except those for which other constitutional arrangements were in place. (1).
Under section 40 of the Local Government (Shires) Act, 1905 a council was obliged to maintain true and regular accounts in books of accounts of all sums of money received or paid. The forms or manner in which these books were kept, were prescribed by the Governor (2).
This series details contributions to works book of the Waugoola Shire Council. The series records the following information: date of approval, Council’s minute number, amount approved, locality, description of work, name of owner, occupier or body contributing to cost, unit, quantity, rate, total cost of work, job number, amount of contribution due, amount borne by the council, date amount sentout, payment contribution, ledger account to which chargeable, half cost posting done on, audit, outstanding at end of half year, carried forward to folio of this book and remarks.
The entries are in chronological order. As required by the Local Government (Shire) Act, the series was audited regularly (3). It appears that only one item in this series has survived.
