Full description

This Administrative Handbook was produced to provide information on College procedures and to consolidate information issued to staff previously in the form of correspondence or memoranda. Although aimed at all staff, the publication was intended particularly for those with administrative responsibilities and functions. Copies of the handbook were also made available in the main sections and offices of the College.

The handbook itself is divided in two parts: Administrative procedures and the 'Rules of Council'. The preamble of the handbook suggests that the two sections should be used in conjunction to facilitate greater understanding of the workings of the College.

The areas covered by the Administrative procedures section of the handbook includes: central administration; staffing matters; services (such as mail, telephone, stationery); the Information Resources Centre (Library); academic matters; student matters; finance and supply; buildings and grounds; and a miscellaneous section dealing with publicity, fire safety, first aid, emergency contacts and lost property, etc.

The 'Rules of Council' were the specific rules put into place by the Council of the College. These rules helped the governing body to control the development and direction of the College. The rules, which were up-to-date at the time of printing (January 1975) were derived from the College By-Laws and covered topics which included: the academic progress of students and the granting of academic awards, appeals by students, the appointment of Praelectors, the appointment of staff, the Chairman’s allowance, the maintenance and enforcement of good order of students within the College, the powers and authorities of the Principal; the granting of leave, promotion and progression of academic staff, and staff development schemes.
