Full description

The Index was commenced in July, 1899, but includes retrospective entries for the admissions of all inmates of the Benevolent Asylum in residence on the first of that month.

The earliest such admission recorded took place on the 29th of September, 1888. The arrangement within each volume is a-order alphabetical, with admission and discharge dates recorded against each patient's name. In or about March, 1926, when some of the letters in the first volume had little or no room left for further entries, a second volume was commenced, but entries continued to be made in the less congested portions of the first volume until July, 1932. For this period, therefore, it is necessary to use both volumes in tandem. The final pages of the second volume include a listing of 106 males and 147 females against numbers of "Form A1." It is conjectured that this may have to do with registration for ration books or identity cards during the Second World War.
