(2)This register appears to have been compiled in 1941, upon the passing of the Old Balmain (Leichhardt) Cemetery Act 1941 (Act No.12,1941). This Act authorised the conversion of the cemetery to a park, and the removal of headstones and grave enclosures. Leichhardt Municipal Council was required to compile the register and plan of the cemetery under section 3 (subsection) 5 (a), of the legislation. Relatives of people buried in the cemetery were given time to arrange reinterment in surrounding cemeteries. (3)The information contained in the register may have partly been compiled on the basis of information recorded in NRS 15800 Burial Register of Balmain Cemetery.Custody History This series was in the custody of Mitchell library from 1965 until December 2001 when it was transferred to State Records NSW under section 29 of the State Records Act, 1998.Endnotes1. This series consists of the Record of interment and land sales from the Balmain Cemetery.

The Record contains the following personal information: The date of burial name of person, profession, denomination, late residence, age, name of undertaker. Information regarding the plot purchased includes: selected grave, purchased grave, ordinary grave, size of ground, and remarks.

Remarks records information regarding other entries in the register. Individual may have been interred in a family plot, or vault. The register can be used to track this information, through the cross reference of register entry numbers.
