Full description
This series comprises minutes (or extracts of minutes) from the meetings held between the Railway Commissioners of New South Wales (accompanied by divisional and district railway officers) and local groups on tours of inspection of the New South Wales rail system. The inspections covered railway line and building improvements or current operating problems. These minutes detail both local grievances and petitions for action with the Commissioner's responses plus their directions to specific railway officers. In some cases handwritten notations have been made giving a Commissioner's file number or with regard to an operational decision.
The physical format of the minutes for 1949-1952 is a single bound volume with typed pages glued into the volume. The Physical format of the minutes for 1956-1968 is typed pages glued on to pages. These are loose and bundled together.
Custody History
From 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.
This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as series R72 (1956-1968) and R366 (1949-1952). It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R72 and R366 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works.
