The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as series R24 and R25. Full description

This series comprises the minutes of proceedings of meetings of Mechanical Branch officers. Most minutes are bound together with regular reports on various aspects of Branch activities which were probably meeting papers.

From 1927, monthly reports of Mechanical Branch activities are bound with the minutes. These reports detail activities under the headings of: Locomotive stock, Passenger and Goods rolling stock, Mileage and ton mileage, Consumption of coal and fuel oil, consumption of lubricants - hot running, Casualties and failures, Total staff employed.

Between 1972 and 1980, the minutes and reports include Electrical, Equipment and Workshops Branches, under the Rail Division of the Public Transport Commission.
