Full description
The butts are part of a form series, the other half of the forms being the licence sent to licensees while the butt was retained as an office record. Examples of the form of the licence may be seen at butt no.179 (4/61) or after butt no.724 (4/83).
They contain details of the licence number, the date of issue of the licence, the name and address of the licensee and sign of hotel, period covered by the licence and amount of duty received, names of licensing justices and date and place of meeting of justices authorising the issue of the licence.
Volumes 4/61-80 part (to No.432), June 1830-June 1847, are indexed (microfilm copy SR Reels 1355-1357). There are two alphabetical sequences: by name of hotel and name of licensee. Full details of the licences are given on the cards.
There is also a separate index (microfilm copy SR Reel 1357) for licences issued in the Port Phillip district in 1839, which covers volumes 4/70-71 only. This index is also in two sequences, by name of hotel and name of licensee.
(4/61-83, 7/1501). 24 vols.
