Full description

These volumes contain copies of reports and memoranda in reply to letters sent under "blank cover" by the Colonial Secretary. The volumes contain copies of the Colonial Secretary's memoranda calling for information; copies of the Surveyor General's replies thereto; and references to both the Colonial Secretary's and Surveyor General's "blank cover" registration numbers. The margins of the various volumes contain references to correspondence, and of the entry of letters in Register of letters received under blank cover from the Colonial Secretary. The subject matter is very miscellaneous including up to 1837 reports on claims to land grants. Other material in the series includes copies of covering notes transmitting deeds and descriptions of land, reports on the opening of roads, the establishment of burial grounds and reserves, and the supply of maps to government officials.

Letters sent under "blank cover" to the Surveyor General were letters initially addressed to the Colonial Secretary and then forwarded to the Surveyor General without a covering letter, but merely a note on the letter requesting the Surveyor General's report. Sometimes such letters were retained by the Surveyor General and filed away in Letters received from the Colonial Secretary; in most cases they were returned to the Colonial Secretary with the Surveyor General's reply.
