Full description

The Roll of Attorneys contains the names of the attorneys admitted by the Supreme Court of New South Wales under The Australian Courts Act, 1828 (9 Geo. IV, c. 83) and subsequent acts.

The volumes are arranged in chronological order of admission. They are unindexed. The following details are recorded: full name or signature, date of admission and remarks. Remarks may include details of practice in a previous jurisdiction, whether the admission was conditional or final, whether the person later transferred to practice elsewhere, was struck off or died.

It is understood that the roll includes solicitors, proctors, attorneys, conveyancers and possibly barristers, although there is no indication in which category any individual practitioner was enrolled.

This series is subsequent to Roll of Barristers, solicitors, attorneys, proctors and conveyancers, 1848- 1876 established under An Act to regulate the admission in certain cases of Barristers of the Supreme Court of New South Wales Act 1848 (11 Vic., No. 57). It is thought that the passage of An Act to regulate the admission in certain cases of Barristers in the Supreme Court of New South Wales, 1876 (39 Victoria Act No 32) may have precipitated the creation of separate registers for barristers and attorneys.
