The series consists of files of correspondence and minutes relating to state coal mines, dealing with both policy matters and day to day operational issues.

Subjects covered by the papers include plans for the development and sale of Oakdale State Coal Mine, amendments to the State Coal Mines Act 1912 (Act No.70, 1912), purchase of land, financial matters, survey records, applications for Mining Purposes Leases, industrial matters, equipment purchase and maintenance, workers compensation claims, maintenance and improvements to mines, supplies and equipment, maintenance and improvements to mines, staff matters, training and recruitment, project reports, productivity reports, statistical surveys, accident reports, damage reports (e.g. flood damage at Lithgow), and personal files.

The items in this series are partly in bundles of papers and partly in covered files.

This series, later known as State Coal Mines 'SCM' files, was formerly described in the Concise Guide to the State Archives of New South Wales, 2nd ed., as 'Miscellaneous correspondence and minutes'.
