Full description

These volumes are copies of letters sent by the Sheriff and Under Sheriff to government officers and private persons. Those addressed in the series include: Colonial Secretary; Attorney General; Principal Superintendant of Police, later Inspector General of Police; local police; Principal Gaoler; gaolers of minor gaols; Colonial Architect; Secretary for Finance and Trade; Undersecretaries of departments (eg. Law, Lands); Crown Solicitor; Auditor General; Medical Adviser to the Government; Visiting Justices; Visiting Surgeons; chaplains; Government Printer; Deputy Commissary General; Superintendent of Stores; Secretary, Board of Government Asylums; consuls; and individuals, such as relatives of prisoners and solictors.

By the twentieth century the duties of the Sheriff had been considerably curtailed and were less varied in nature. Volume 6/5487, which is a letterpress copy book, reflects this and the letters sent mainly concern land sales, juries, court property and the serving of writs.

The earliest extant volume in the series is held by the Veech Library, Catholic Institute of Sydney, 99 Albert Road, Strathfield.
