Full description
These are the original Parliamentary Acts, signed and dated by the Governor of New South Wales. They are lodged with the Registrar General for enrolment within 10 days of being signed and dated by the Governor, in accordance with the provisions of Section 50 of the Constitution Act 1902. (1)
The responsibility for enrolling and recording Acts first rested with the Supreme Court from 1 March 1829. The Registration of Deeds Act 1843, which came into operation on 1 January 1844, transferred this responsibility to the Registrar General. (2) This function was terminated from 31 December 1849 until 1 May 1857, when it was again restored to the Registrar General. The Registration of Deeds Act 1897 as amended continued to place this responsibility with the Registrar General. (3)
The earlier Acts of the Governor and Legislative Council assented to 28 September 1824 to 3 May 1827, are held in the New South Wales Parliamentary Archives.
Some drafts of early Acts and Act 9 George IV No 1 to Act 10 George IV No.2 are included in NRS-13699.
The Acts Act 10 George IV No 3 (9/9/1829) to Act 14 Victoria No 49 (2/5/1851) are contained in large bound volumes. All subsequent acts from Act 15 Victoria No 1 (1/12/1851) are printed on vellum, interlaced with ribbon down the left hand side, with a paper seal affixed.
The Acts are arranged by regnal year. Because of gaps in Parliamentary sittings it is possible to have two acts numbered as 1 for different regnal years in the same calendar year.
