Full description
These reports concern inspections of grave sites in Devonshire Street Cemetery, to determine the grave's suitability for transfer to another cemetery, and cost of removal. When Devonshire Street Cemetery was resumed to allow development of Central Railway Station, the Department of Public Works assumed responsibility for the removal of headstones and monuments, and re-interment of remains.
The report for each grave or vault inspected includes a description of the site, noting location and size of the ground, and the size and state of repair of any monuments, stonework, brickwork, fencing and kerbing, with recommendations regarding their suitability for removal. Also included are estimates for the cost of removal or repair, with recommendations for the amount allowable to relatives for expenses incurred.
The Department paid for all reasonable costs incurred in removing and replacing a grave and re-interring remains in another metropolitan cemetery, but any new work required or extra costs were at the relatives' expense.
