Full description
This consists of press copies of letters sent in reply to enquiries and applications received from relatives of deceased persons buried in the Devonshire Street Cemetery, which was resumed to allow development of Central Railway Station. The Department of Public Works assumed responsibility for the cost of removal of headstones and monuments, and re-interment of remains at other cemeteries. The letters concern applications for permission to exhume and re-inter remains at other cemeteries, removal costs of monuments and grave site stone and ironwork, explanations of policy and procedures, approvals of estimates of expenditure submitted for removal and re-interment costs, and letters relinquishing exhumation permits in favour of allowing the Department to remove and re-inter remains at the new cemetery at La Perouse (later Botany Cemetery).
The letters are arranged by an annual running number, but the approvals of estimates of expenditure, interfiled with the other correspondence, are not numbered and are frequently undated.
The volumes include an index at the front of each.
