Full description

The provenance of this volume is uncertain. It may have been an exhibit for a case held at the Central Police Court in May 1936. Pinned to the bottom-right of page 97, at entry 659, is a fragment of an exhibit tag: "Exhibit No. 9, Rex v D?, Central Police Court, 19.5.36". Unfortunately, only the first letter of the defendant’s name can be read as that part of the tag is missing.

This volume appears to relate to the supply and despatch of orders for a wide range of apparel, which suggests it was used by a clothing manufacturer or wholesale warehouse. Businesses featured include: Marcus Clark & Co. Ltd; Burns Philp & Co. Ltd.; Sargood Gardner Ltd; Millards Ltd; Buckingham Ltd; Hordern Bros Ltd; Beare & Ley Ltd; Bon Marche Ltd; Gowing Bros; Winns and other businesses in New South Wales country areas and in Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and New Zealand.

Each entry provides the assignee name and location, the number and description of the products supplied, the cost of the goods, the date, and the method of delivery. The latter is dependent on destination and includes: carrier, goods rail, passenger rail, post, and ship or shipping company. Often the items are identified only by number codes and various sizes are specified (e.g. sw, w, os, xos). Entry 659, where the exhibit tag is affixed, relates to Fitform Menswear of York Street, Sydney.

The volume, of 152 pages, contains entries for orders numbered 1 to 956, dated from 7 August 1935 to 20 March 1936. The pages were originally in duplicate but the volume now contains only carbon copies.
