We directly compared thermal cameras and traditional spotlights in vehicle‐based surveys for detecting small, cryptic endotherms at night. Thermal cameras provide improved detection rates and detection distances under a range of vegetation structures compared to spotlights, while causing less disturbance to roosting animals.
