Brief description
Announced in the 2004-2005 budget, NCRIS is provided $542 million from 2004-05 to 2010-2011 to develop and fund national research infrastructure projects. Through NCRIS the Australian Government is implementing a strategic and collaborative approach to investment in world-class research facilities, networks and infrastructure that are accessible to researchers and meet their long-term needs.
The National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) supports major research infrastructure to encourage collaboration between the research sector, industry and government in Australia to conduct world-class research. It is designed to provide Australia’s research sector with on-going access to high-quality, operational research infrastructure facilities. This will ensure that Australian research continues to be competitive and rank highly on an international scale.
As part of the 2013-14 Budget, the Australian Government announced additional funding for the renewal of NCRIS. The renewed NCRIS will provide $185.9 million from 2013-14 to 2014-15 to secure Australian researchers’ access to current major research facilities and the supporting infrastructure and networks.
The NCRIS Committee identified 16 capability areas (priorities for investment in major research infrastructure) in the 2006 NCRIS Road Map. In 2008 and 2011, the capability areas were reviewed and refined, and new areas were identified.
