Full description mHealth apps are increasingly used to facilitate synchronous healthcare provider-patient communication. However, their specific usage contexts and influence on the provider-patient relationship remains under-researched. We conducted a systematic review of 29 studies reporting how mHealth apps were used to provide healthcare at a distance. A narrative thematic analysis identified several enablers and barriers of mHealth app adoption. We discuss how mHealth apps shape the provider-patient healthcare communication experience, noting the utility of mHealth apps for the management of chronic health conditions. Practical implications include the need for bespoke mHealth apps that facilitate sustainable care options for providers and patients.
