Research Project
Full description Mushrooms that produce psilocybin, a breakthrough compound in mental health, are diverse in Australia and could be the foundation of an emerging global industry. This project will establish a breeding program founded on the diversity of native mushrooms and determine the genetics behind traits needed by industry. The project has commercial and economic value by developing knowledge and resources that support new industries to innovate psilocybin and take ownership of a global industry based on Australian biodiversity. The project has social value adding to a $2.3 billion Federal Government investment in mental health of Australians. The project has environmental value by conserving our native species of fungi against habitat loss and supporting an ethical and sustainable industry. This collaborative research will be tested and directly translated through an ongoing collaboration between University and an industry developing pharmaceutical grade psilocybin to benefit mental health.
