Full description

This series is made up of two types of cards.

The majority of the cards record the following information for each locomotive tender: tender number, the maker’s name and number, date the locomotive commenced to run, number of wheels, water capacity, coal capacity, and the weight of the locomotive when empty and when loaded.

The remaining cards record: tender number, description of engine, maker’s name and number, date the locomotive commenced to run, dimensions of driving wheel, cost, weight of engine when loaded and empty, new class, old class, tractive effort, boiler pressure, heating surface, steam and wheel arrangement. Many of the categories in these cards have no information recorded.
These cards also usually record the fate of the locomotive, whether it was sold or scrapped and the date this occurred.

The cards are arranged by the locomotive's tender number.

The series is not complete. Some cards appear to be missing.

Custody History
From 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.

This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was part of series R148. It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R148 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works.
