Full description
Whole-rock geochemical analyses of mafic volcanic rocks from the Fortescue Group in the Hamersley Basin of WA. The files contain 254whole-rock analyses, most of which are unpublished.Lineage: Sampling of mafic volcanic rocks of the Fortescue Group by R E Smith commenced in October, 1973, through to June 1978. The purpose was (a) to establish the metamorphic framework for the Hamersley Basin, and (b) to gain an understanding of metasomatic alteration (hydrothermal alteration) of the volcanic rocks which was conspicuous in the field.
Several scientific papers were published during the 1970s, culminating in a paper in the Journal of Petrology in 1982 by Smith, Perdrix and Parks. Further research and sampling was carried out from 2008 through 2014, resulting in two substantial publications by White et al., 2014.
