The main objectives of the Cobar Basin seismic survey were to acquire deep reflection seismic data along several seismic lines across the Cobar Basin and the bounding west and east margins, and acquire high resolution seismic data across zones of known mineralisation in the Cobar Basin and bounding margins. Scheibner of the NSW Department of Minerals and Energy (now NSW Department of Mineral Resources) as part of the Australian ACORP (Australian Continental Reflection Profiling) program (Scheibner, 1985). The seismic traverse suggested by Scheibner over the northern part of the basin (i.e. Uralla to Boggabri via Manilla) was seen by BMR to be the best alternative from a logistic and scientific point of view. Petroleum industry companies mooted that the line should also attempt to solve the problem of the location of the western margin of the basin. The proposed regional seismic line was therefore extended west of Boggabri to examine the western margin of the basin. The Cobar Basin seismic survey was also proposed as part of the ACORP program and envisaged as a joint research project between the BMR, the NSW Department of Minerals and Energy and mining industry interests in the Cobar region. The profiles were designed and positioned to determine the three dimensional structure of the Cobar Basin.
