Brief description

Geoscience Australia with assistance from the Geological Survey of Queensland conducted a seismic survey in southeast Queensland form April to December 1984. The survey set out to investigate deep structures within the earth's crust and is the first of the Australian Continental Reflection Profiling (ACORP), initiatives to study critical transects of the Australian lithosphere. The survey obtained 798 km of six-fold seismic reflection data over the Westgate Trough, Nebine Ridge, Surat Basin, Kumbarilla Ridge, and Clarence-Moreton Basin.

Statement: The BMR conducted a seismic reflection survey along a line from Cheepie in western Queensland to Beenleigh on the east coast of Australia. This line is approximately 800 km long and joins lines 1 and 9 previously recorded in the Central Eromanga Basin (Wake-Dyster and Pinchin, 1981; Sexton and Taylor, 1983; Sexton and Taylor). Together these projects have produced approximately 1000 km of 6-fold CDP data recorded to 20 seconds two-way time (39 seconds in the Surat Basin) along a line spanning south Queensland from Mount Howitt No. 1 oil exploration well in the west to the eastern margin of the Clarence-Moreton Basin. Expanded reflection spreads and wide-angle reflection recordings were sited at several areas of geological interest. Other associated geophysical techniques include refraction studies which will assist in determining velocity structures. Gravity, aeromagnetic, and radiometric profiles were also recorded along this transect. The ojective of the survey was to study the structure at depth of the continental crust, and to investigate the palaeotectonic development of the New England-Yarrol part of the Tasman Fold Belt and the overlying Eromanga, Surat, and Clarence-Moreton Basins.
