The very deep waters of the Timor Trough were crossed twice. Operations also extended into adjacent waters to the east and to the west. The complete coverage was contained entirely between the latitudes 9 degrees and 15 degrees south and the longitudes 120 degrees and 133 degrees east. The Timor Sea Geophysical Survey was carried out during the latter part of 1967 by United Geophysical
Corporation for the Bureau of Mineral Resources. The town of Darwin, Northern Territory, was the base of
operations. The survey covered most of the area between the Island of Timor and the northwest Australian Coast, and extended into adjacent waters as well. The purpose was to obtain reconnaissance gravity, magnetic, and seismic information in the area. Some 15,000 linear miles of coverage were obtained on 33 east-west traverses spaced ten miles apart, 6 north-south traverses, and 12 irregularly oriented lines.
