Full description
The Institute for Future Environments (IFE) studies how our natural, built and virtual environments interact, change and converge, to find ways to make them more sustainable, secure and resilient.
We develop solutions and responses to the grand challenges facing humanity as our global population increases in size and influence. Our vision is for future populations to sustainably live in, and adapt to, a resource-constrained world.
Our goal is to generate knowledge, technologies and practices that deliver outcomes and benefit the broader community.
IFE brings together hundreds of QUT academics and students from the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, law, business, education and creative industries to participate in interdisciplinary research and development at scale with focus. We work with partners in the public and private sectors on the practical applications of our research and the delivery of viable outcomes for a sustainable future.
Our research is focused on the following areas:
Mathematics, Computation, Simulation and e-Research
Future Energy Systems and Clean Technologies
Secure and Resilient Infrastructure
Intelligent Systems and Adaptive Communities
Healthy Ecosystems and Environmental Monitoring
Sustainable Tropical and Subtropical Production
Geosystems and Resources.
IFE is based at QUT’s Science and Engineering Centre, a world-class research and education facility and community hub. Our researchers are supported by critical research infrastructure, such as:
Central Analytical Research Facility (CARF)
Visualisation and Data Interpretation
Samford Ecological Research Facility (SERF)
Pilot Plants
