Full description

This data set forms part of the AIMS Long-Term Monitoring Program, which is the longest running coral reef monitoring dataset on the GBR. This research describes the ability of individual reefs across the length and breadth of the GBR to recover from disturbances. It is based on manta tow surveys on a total of 490 reefs from 1985 to 2022. The data was modelled using a Bayesian framework to look at the impacts of disturbances and their level of recovery compared to historical benchmarks.

Statement: Data are categorical estimates of total hard coral cover collected by experienced observers using manta tow surveys as part of the Long-Term Monitoring Program at the Australian Institute of Marine Science. QA/QC processes include the use of Standard Operating Procedures, observer training and calibrations, as well as data checking procedures of uploaded database against hard copies collected in the field.
