Brief description

This data package contains the main hydrogeological datasets compiled, analysed, developed, and used for the Geoscience Australia project that investigated the Cenozoic geology, hydrogeology, and groundwater systems of the Kati Thanda - Lake Eyre Basin in central Australia. This work, which was published as Geoscience Australia Record 2024/05 (Evans et al. 2024), was delivered as part of the National Groundwater Systems project in the Exploring for the Future program.

The hydrogeological and groundwater data includes new aquifer and aquifer province attribution for many thousands of groundwater bores, large-scale compilations of existing water level, salinity, and hydrogeochemical data, and new mapping of regional watertable trends and depth to standing water across the basin. These data are represented within the Geoscience Australia Record as various maps and related diagrams.

Statement:
The datasets within this data product are mostly derived through geospatial analysis and processing of pre-existing primary data sources. For example, the various datasets associated with groundwater bores were obtained from available sources of bore data, such as the respective state and territory groundwater bore databases. These are supplemented in some cases by bore data from other groundwater investigations, such as those of Cendon et al. (2010) and the Geological and Bioregional Assessment program (2021). Existing datasets were compiled and integrated with other data using ArcGIS software for purposes of analysis and interpretation of hydrogeological and related groundwater features. For further details, refer to the specific metadata documentation provided for each dataset in this package.

Notes

Purpose
This data package provides access for external stakeholders to the key hydrogeological datasets that were developed and used in the study of the Cenozoic geology, hydrogeology, and groundwater systems of the Kati Thanda – Lake Eyre Basin (Evans et al. 2024). Most of the datasets are based on analysis and processing of existing groundwater bore data obtained from a variety of jurisdictional and academic sources.
