Brief description
Gravity data measure small changes in gravity due to changes in the density of rocks beneath the Earth's surface. The gravity data collection contains both onshore and offshore data acquired on geophysical surveys conducted by Commonwealth, State & NT Governments and the private sector.Lineage

Statement: The gravity data set contains more than 1.57 million reliable onshore stations gathered during more than 1800 surveys. The collection also includes a large number of data acquired during seismic surveys from Australia offshore basins. Continental Australia has a basic station spacing coverage of 11 km, with South Australia, Tasmania and part of New South Wales covered at a spacing of 7 km. Victoria has station coverage of approximately 1.5 km. Some areas of scientific or economic interest have been infilled with station spacings between 2 km and 4 km by recent Commonwealth, State and Territory Government initiatives. Other areas of detailed coverage have been surveyed by private companies for exploration purposes.
The data quality varies depending on the survey. The data are processed via standard methods to ensure the response recorded in the data is that due only to the rocks in the ground. The results produce datasets that can be interpreted to reveal the geological structure of the sub-surface. The processed data are checked for quality by GA geophysicists to ensure that the final data released by GA are fit-for-purpose.
