Genetic and geographic population structure in the malaria vector, Anopheles farauti, provides a candidate model system for pioneering confinable gene-drive releases.

Full description This project includes a comprehensive range-wide assessment of Anopheles farauti population structure as well as an assessment of relationships between populations of An. farauti and other closely related member of the species complex based on whole mitogenomes and Cardinal gene DNA sequence data. It also includes an assessment of the suitability of modifying a gene drive construct developed in An. gambiae which targets the Cardinal gene for use in An. farauti for local population replacement.
