A.P. Amies (later Sir Arthur Amies) studied dentistry at the University of Melbourne and medicine at Edinburgh University. He practiced dentistry privately for three years and held various honorary hopital appointments before becoming Professor of Dental Science in 1933. He retired in 1968.
