Brief description

Elaine Stratford is a Professor in the Institute for the Study of Social Change, College of Arts and Law, University of Tasmania. Between July 2015 and April 2017, she was foundation Director of the Peter Underwood Centre for Educational Attainment at the University of Tasmania. The Centre is part of the formal ten-year partnership agreement between the University and Tasmanian Government in association with the Office of the Governor of Tasmania. Prior to that time, she was a member of the School of Geography and Environmental Studies, and its head from 2005 to 2013.Internationally recognised and valued for research in human geography, Elaine works to understand how people flourish in place, in their movements, in daily life, and over their lives. Studies with children and young people in island places have been a particular feature of Elaine's work, and she is adept at working with those from other disciplines, including - but not limited to - sociology, health science, anthropology, visual arts, politics, ecology, and education.Deeply committed to service, Elaine has extensive experience on University, local, Tasmanian, and federal government committees, school boards, and international professional organisations. She is or has been:* the elected academic member of University Council* an elected member of Academic Senate* a member of the Australian Research Council College of Experts* a Fellow of the Institute of Australian Geographers, Royal Society of Arts and of the Royal Geographical Society/Institute of British Geographers* a Senior Honorary Fellow of the LH Martin Institute at the University of MelbourneElaine has served the Tasmanian community on numerous occasions - for example, as Chair of the Southern Regional Reference Group for Economic Development, Chair of the Human Settlements Committee for the State of the Environment Report, and community member on the Auditor General's Advisory Committee.Elaine has also participated in numerous national and international organisations including, but not limited to, the following:* Member of the Board of Directors, Global Islands Network (2002-2010)* from 2002-6, Councillor (Treasurer) and member Institute of Australian Geographers (1999–)* Executive Member, International Geographical Union Commission on Islands (2006- )* Executive Member, International Small Island Studies Association (2006- )* 12/2015–18, Editor-in-Chief, Geographical Research (Journal of the Institute of Australian Geographers.
