Effects of Sr alloying on corrosion performance of a die-cast Mg-Al-rare earth alloy

Research Project

Full description The project studied the effects of Sr alloying on microstructure of a Mg-Al-RE alloy and on the corrosion performance in 3.5 wt. % NaCl saturated with Mg(OH)2. The addition of Sr introduces a large amount of additional intermetallic phase and produces refined intermetallic networks within a dendritic framework resulting in improved network continuity. The presence of continuous intermetallic boundaries enhances the corrosion resistance of Mg-Al-Re alloy containing Sr.
