Brief description

Dr. Tomas Holderness is a Geomatics Research Fellow at the SMART Infrastructure Facility, University of Wollongong, where his research focuses on the use of geospatial analysis, Earth observation, and network modeling techniques applied to urban infrastructure resilience and Earth systems engineering.

Holderness co-directs PetaJakarta.org with Etienne Turpin. PetaJakarta.org harnesses the power of social media to gather, sort, and display information about flooding for Jakarta residents in real time. In collaboration with colleagues from Newcastle University (UK), Dr. Holderness developed a pioneering spatio-topological database schema for encoding, modelling, and analyzing spatial infrastructure networks, and their inter-dependencies. He has successfully applied this framework to model sanitation networks in rapidly-urbanizing developing regions of Africa using crowd-sourced data and volunteer geographic information
