Full description

ToF-SIMS analysis of silane coated silica, modified for the purpose of removal of humic acid from drinking water.

The surface of these silica particles had been modified through a process of plasma polymerisation, which resulted in coating with an amine adduct. These sands are to be used in water treatment to help remove undesirable contaminants, such as humic acid. The influences of treatment time and plasma polymerisation settings were investigated by ToF-SIMS, by measuring the distribution and intensity of the plasma polymer signal. This could then be correlated to the best conditions to use when designing a low cost water treatment system.
