Developing Life Cycle Assessment and Techno-Economic Analysis Frameworks for precision fermentation of milk proteins and its integration into current dairy infrastructure

Research Project

Full description Precision fermentation (PF) employs engineered microorganisms to produce food-grade proteins, yet its environmental performance relative to conventional protein sources remains insufficiently understood. In this study, we conducted a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment of producing 1 kg of whey protein equivalent via PF using Trichoderma reesei, exploring four feedstock options, multiple co-product allocation approaches, and alternative electricity mixes.
