Full description

These parish maps of the County of Cumberland are probably the earliest charting copies of parish maps put into office use in the Lands Department.

There appear to be two distinct series (neither of which is complete), plus a number of maps which do not fall into discernible categories.

The first series comprises maps which were probably compiled at the time of the Proclamation of the Parishes and Hundreds of the County of Cumberland in May 1835 (see Supplement to the NSW Government Gazette, 27 May 1835). None of these maps appear to have been annotated after their date of compilation.

The second series comprises maps which appear to be based on those drawn and published by Brownrigg (surveyor) between 1846 and 1850.  NRS 12466 contains a  number of these maps in printed form.

It should be noted that NRS 13028 (Registrar General: Charting copies of County of Cumberland Parish Maps) includes many maps similar to those in the abovementioned series.

(SR Map Nos. 300-361 and 6219). 63 maps.
