Full description

The 'Components of a citrus fruit' diagram was developed by Roanna Jones, PhD student, during the course of her studies.

Roanna is investigating the economic feasibility and environmental impacts of food loss and waste (FLW) processing options. Through the course of this study, she designed a downselection framework for FLW management options, which culminated in a case study that investigated citrus processing waste. This citrus diagram was created to demonstrate the physical structure of citrus fruits and the components that may undergo bioprocessing (e.g. fermentation, anaerobic digestion, incineration with energy recovery) to retrieve valuable products (e.g. essential oil, energy, biogas).

The diagram is based on an orange but may be applicable to other citrus fruits.
