CFA's preventable residential fire fatality data captures fatalities as a result of residential fires that were started accidentally or as a result of a fault, failure or misuse of an electrical or gas appliance. Not included in these data are fatalities as a result of suspected homicide or suicide, or as a result of a bushfire. These data are captured for CFA to meet their statutory obligations and to identify areas for intervention (e.g. product recalls).
