This series consists of case records for female patients admitted to the Broughton Hall Psychiatric Clinic, compiled under the Lunacy Act, 1898 (Act No.45, 1898) s.27-30. Broughton Hall offered psychiatric assistance to voluntary patients under this Act, as amended by the Lunacy Amendment Act, 1934 (Act No.39, 1934); and subsequently under the Mental Health Act, 1958 (Act No.45, 1958) and later legislation.

These are case papers for patients admitted and discharged from around 1920 to the 1950s, with a few files extending to 1976.

The case papers may include: a summary sheet recording dates of admission(s); results of examinations of mental and physical condition; family and marital history; record of progress; correspondence with or regarding the patient; behaviour and treatment records; test results; and personal effects lists.
