Mini-DV HandiCams with wide-angle lens adapters (0.6X) were used in the housings. Exposure was set to 'Auto', focus was set to Infinity/manual' and 'Standard Play' mode was selected to provide at least 45-60 minutes of filming at the seabed. Detachable bait arms (20 mm plastic conduit) had a 350 mm plastic mesh canister containing one kilogram of crushed oily sardines (Sardinops or Sardinella spp) as bait. BRUVS (TM) were deployed with 8 mm polypropylene ropes and polystyrene surface floats bearing a marker flag, and were retrieved with a hydraulic pot-hauler wheel. A scope length of 2 times water depth was used on the ropes.&rft.creator=Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) &rft.date=2024&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.81922; southlimit=-22.09671; eastlimit=113.81922; northlimit=-22.09671&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.81922; southlimit=-22.09671; eastlimit=113.81922; northlimit=-22.09671&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.81588; southlimit=-22.10772; eastlimit=113.81588; northlimit=-22.10772&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.81588; southlimit=-22.10772; eastlimit=113.81588; northlimit=-22.10772&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.81133; southlimit=-22.11817; eastlimit=113.81133; northlimit=-22.11817&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.81133; southlimit=-22.11817; eastlimit=113.81133; northlimit=-22.11817&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.57577; southlimit=-22.66468; eastlimit=113.57577; northlimit=-22.66468&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.57577; southlimit=-22.66468; eastlimit=113.57577; northlimit=-22.66468&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.57368; southlimit=-22.6759; eastlimit=113.57368; northlimit=-22.6759&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.57368; southlimit=-22.6759; eastlimit=113.57368; northlimit=-22.6759&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.57131; southlimit=-22.68614; eastlimit=113.57131; northlimit=-22.68614&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.57131; southlimit=-22.68614; eastlimit=113.57131; northlimit=-22.68614&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.55766; southlimit=-22.66798; eastlimit=113.55766; northlimit=-22.66798&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.55766; southlimit=-22.66798; eastlimit=113.55766; northlimit=-22.66798&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.55615; southlimit=-22.67547; eastlimit=113.55615; northlimit=-22.67547&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.55615; southlimit=-22.67547; eastlimit=113.55615; northlimit=-22.67547&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.55333; southlimit=-22.6849; eastlimit=113.55333; northlimit=-22.6849&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.55333; southlimit=-22.6849; eastlimit=113.55333; northlimit=-22.6849&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.65314; southlimit=-23.09813; eastlimit=113.65314; northlimit=-23.09813&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.65314; southlimit=-23.09813; eastlimit=113.65314; northlimit=-23.09813&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.64556; southlimit=-23.10765; eastlimit=113.64556; northlimit=-23.10765&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.64556; southlimit=-23.10765; eastlimit=113.64556; northlimit=-23.10765&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.63161; southlimit=-23.11156; eastlimit=113.63161; northlimit=-23.11156&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.63161; southlimit=-23.11156; eastlimit=113.63161; northlimit=-23.11156&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.577; southlimit=-23.09315; eastlimit=113.577; northlimit=-23.09315&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.577; southlimit=-23.09315; eastlimit=113.577; northlimit=-23.09315&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.57425; southlimit=-23.08104; eastlimit=113.57425; northlimit=-23.08104&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.57425; southlimit=-23.08104; eastlimit=113.57425; northlimit=-23.08104&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.57986; southlimit=-23.10226; eastlimit=113.57986; northlimit=-23.10226&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.57986; southlimit=-23.10226; eastlimit=113.57986; northlimit=-23.10226&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.68005; southlimit=-23.10076; eastlimit=113.68005; northlimit=-23.10076&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.68005; southlimit=-23.10076; eastlimit=113.68005; northlimit=-23.10076&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.68089; southlimit=-23.0917; eastlimit=113.68089; northlimit=-23.0917&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.68089; southlimit=-23.0917; eastlimit=113.68089; northlimit=-23.0917&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.67991; southlimit=-23.08562; eastlimit=113.67991; northlimit=-23.08562&rft.coverage=westlimit=113.67991; southlimit=-23.08562; eastlimit=113.67991; northlimit=-23.08562&rft_rights= http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/au/&rft_rights=http://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-nc/3.0/au/88x31.png&rft_rights=WWW:LINK-1.0-http--related&rft_rights=License Graphic&rft_rights=Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 Australia License&rft_rights=http://creativecommons.org/international/au/&rft_rights=WWW:LINK-1.0-http--related&rft_rights=WWW:LINK-1.0-http--related&rft_rights=License Text&rft_rights=Use Limitation: All AIMS data, products and services are provided as is and AIMS does not warrant their fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement. Brief description

The dataset comprises 413 individuals from 54 species of fishes, sharks, rays and sea snakes observed at around Ningaloo Reef using 18 baited remote underwater video stations (BRUVS(TM)). Approximately 3500 of the best images from all BRUVS (TM) projects are stored in a reference library. Data recorded concern: - classification of the habitat in the field of view (topography, sediments, benthos) - the identity of fish and CAABCODES - their time of arrival - their behaviour (8 categories, including feeding on the bait) - their maturity (adult or juvenile) - their relative abundance (as MaxN = the maximum number visible at one time, or distinguishable at different times as separate individuals e.g. much larger/smaller, male/female) - the time elapsed before MaxN and feeding occurs. A custom interface has been developed by AIMS staff, using Microsoft Access, for reading and analysis of BRUVS(TM) tapes.

Statement: Tape reading protocols have been developed in a customised interface using Microsoft Access. The unique combination of a site and a Camera Number links all records in a series of tables in the relational database, allowing access to times that events occurred, together with reference images and reference video. The BRUVS (TM) were deployed about 350-400m apart with the prevailing wind to bracket the coordinate of each sampling site. In some instances, a stereo-video BRUVS (TM) was deployed first, followed by three or four BRUVS (TM) with single cameras. Each BRUVS (TM) consisted of a galvanized trestle-shaped frame enclosing a simple camera housing made from PVC pipe with acrylic front and rear ports. A scope length of 2 times water depth was used on the ropes.
