Full description
The Broken Hill Gaol was established 1946 in the building which housed the former Broken Hill gaol which had closed in 1942. The new prison was not formally proclaimed, but considered to be re-established when admission of prisoners re-commenced in 1946. (1)
In 1970 the Gaol was a 'local prison' with 16 prisoners. The daily average number of prisoners increased in 1969/70 to 15 (or an annual total of 204) from a daily average of 10 (or an annual total of 164) in 1967/68. In earlier years daily average number of prisoners had been between 10 and 13 or an annual total of between 130 and 187. (2)
In 1978 the Gaol was described as a small medium security prison to serve local needs for short-term detention and unconvicted prisoners from courts within area. The daily average number of prisoners in 1977/78 was 22 or an annual total of 236. Number of sentenced prisoners was 13. (3)
The Gaol was rebuilt and developed between 1982 and 1985 at a cost of approximately $160,000. The daily average number of prisoners increased in 1985 to 79, most of whom were male. (4)
The name of the prison was altered to Broken Hill Correctional Centre during 1992. (5)
During 1997/98 the Adult Education and Vocational Training Institute (AEVETI), in conjunction with the Murrumbidgee College of Agriculture secured a $147 000 grant from the Commonwealth Government to conduct an Aboriginal Rural Training Program in 1998/99 for education and training Aboriginal inmates at the Broken Hill Correctional Centre. (6)
On 24 June 2001 number of prisoners in the Broken Hill Correctional centre was 40 of whom 34 were sentenced prisoners. (7)
