Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) provides a non-invasive means for high-resolution subsurface imaging by repurposing existing fibre-optic telecommunication infrastructure. This dataset was collected using the Australian Lightwave Infrastructure Research Testbed (ALIRT), a dedicated research fibre network in Melbourne, Australia, where a 25-km-long fibre-optic cable was transformed into a DAS array. Data were acquired between December 2021 and April 2022, spanning from the Melbourne Central Business District toward the eastern suburbs. The fibre was interrogated using a Silixa iDAS interrogator enabled by AuScope, recording strain-rate at 1 kHz with a fixed gauge length of 10 m and a channel spacing of 4 m. A SmartSolo nodal seismic array (FDSN network code: 4Z) was deployed concurrently across the Melbourne metropolitan area. Level-1 DAS data were temporally decimated from 1,000 Hz to 62.5 Hz, converted from raw integer counts to strain-rate, and stored in HDF5 format. No spatial decimation was applied.Credit
We would like to acknowledge contributions from InPAC lab at RMIT for access to their lab; AARNet for access to the fibre optic network. The Geophysics 2030 project received co-investment from AuScope and the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) to support the data curation at the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI Australia) (https://doi.org/10.47486/XN002). AuScope, the ARDC and NCI Australia are enabled by the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).
