Research Project
Researchers: Dr Pam Watson (Principal investigator)
Full description
Prior to the development of a shopping complex on Dumaresq Street, between Dangar and Jessie Streets, Armidale, the developers and the NSW Heritage Office (now the Heritage Branch of the Office of Environment and Heritage) required an archaeological investigation of the site. This was carried out in 2006 by Dr Pam Watson on behalf of the UNE Heritage Futures Research Centre.
The project uncovered the intact foundations and other evidence of a house dating from the late 1850s and belonging to members of the Scholes family who were prominent in the early development of Armidale. It also recorded subsequent uses of the site including, for example, as a motor garage in the 1950s.
This project contributed to the New England Archaeology: Sites collection (Record No. S78, 2010) held by the Heritage Futures Research Centre, University of New England.
