Full description
As of 17-June-2025, the National Exposure Information System (NEXIS) was no longer maintained by Geoscience Australia and was decommissioned with all products and data retired. For further information please contact Client Services via [email protected].The Australian National Exposure Information System (NEXIS) collates the best publicly-available information, statistics, spatial and survey data into comprehensive and nationally-consistent exposure information datasets. Where data is limited, models are used to apply statistics based on similar areas. Exposure Information products are created at the national, state or local level to understand the elements at risk during an event or as a key input for analysis in risk assessments.
Value: NEXIS products are not intended for operational purposes at the building or individual feature level. Its strength is to provide consistent aggregated exposure information for individual event footprints or at standard community, local, state and national geographies such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Statistical Areas (SA) or Local Government Areas (LGA).
Scope: National detailed exposure information of the number of people, dwellings, other buildings and structures, businesses, agricultural and environmental assets.

Notes
PurposeIn August 2002 the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) published a review of natural disaster relief and mitigation arrangements in Australia (COAG, 2002). One of the recommendations from this review included a commitment by COAG to "develop and implement a five-year national program of systematic and rigorous disaster risk assessments". Geoscience Australia embarked on the development of the National Exposure Information System (NEXIS) in response to the COAG reform commitment on Australia's ability to manage natural disasters and other emergencies. NEXIS was designed to provide nationally consistent exposure information for regional or national impact analyses. Input data used to assess exposure from a variety of hazards
