Brief description
This data contains stem diameter, height measurement and above ground living biomass calculations for stems located in the Alice Mulga core 1ha plot, from 2014 - present.Lineage
Tree survey:All stems within a subplot (0.06 ha) within the core 1 ha plot were mapped in 2014. Stem basal diameter (20 cm from the ground) and height was measured for all trees in 2014 and again in 2018.
Biomass calculations:
The biomass for each stem was calculated using allometric equations from Navar et al., 2013, Regional aboveground biomass equations for North American arid and semi-arid forests. Journal of Arid Environments 97, 127-135.
Site level above ground woody biomass calculations were scaled up to tonnes/ha.
Notes
CreditWe at TERN acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians throughout Australia, New Zealand and all nations. We honour their profound connections to land, water, biodiversity and culture and pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
This work was funded by the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN), an Australian Government National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) project.
This dataset records tree diameter and height data used to calculate above-ground biomass across vegetation types in Australia. This data is important for mapping and monitoring changes in plant growth, carbon storage and terrestrial energy fluxes.
Data Quality Assessment Scope
local :
dataset
Potential diameter and height outliers were assessed by looking at the absolute difference in 1) diameter and 2) height values for each individual stem between two measurement time points. If the diameter or height difference for an individual falls outside the 3rd standard deviation of the mean of that species, then it was flagged as a potential outlier.
Data Quality Assessment Result

Quality Result
All potential outliers were assessed by researchers who collected the data. Any value that was considered to be an outlier was removed from the final dataset.

text: The Alice Mulga site is approximately 200 km north of Alice Springs on Pine Hill Cattle Station in the Northern Territory. It lies in the arid and semi-arid portion of mainland Australia that receives less than 500 mm of annual rainfall.
