Full description
On 1 July 2019 persons employed in the Office of Local Government [I] were transferred to the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. The Office of Local Government [I] was then abolished as a public service executive agency and the Office of Local Government [II] was continued by administrative decision in the Department of Planning Industry and Environment. (1)
The Office of Local Government [II] (OLG) was the NSW Government agency responsible for strengthening the sustainability, performance, integrity, transparency and accountability of the local government sector. OLG had a policy, legislative, investigative and program focus in regulating the State’s 128 local councils. (2)
The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment was renamed the Department of Planning and Environment on 21 December 2021. (3)
In January 2022, the department formed the Crown Lands and Local Government group. The group includes Crown Lands, the Office of Local Government, Aboriginal Strategy and Outcomes, and Cemeteries and Crematoria NSW. (4)
In 2023 the OLG operated with four strategic groups: Policy and Sector Development Group; Sector Performance and Intervention Group; Legal Group and Business Services Group. The OLG worked with the Boundaries Commission, NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal, Remuneration Tribunal and the Local Government Grants Commission. (5)
From 1 January 2024 the name of the Department of Planning and Environment was renamed the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. (6)
